Great first train set, 2008-03-10 Although most Brio is not recommended for children younger than 3 years old, this set is designated as being OK from 18 months old up. We bought it for our son's second birthday, and he absolutely adores it. The pieces all seem very robust, and there is relatively limited scope for him to do much damage with the pieces if he throws a tantrum. For instance the house is made of a soft material. Learning how to run the train on and off the tracks, keep it on the track, run it through the house and use the right magnet on each carriage to connect to the others has proved to be an absorbing exercise in physical and mental dexterity. Apart from the elegant simplicity of the tracks itself, all the pieces are brightly coloured with familiar fruits on the side of the carriages.
Of course, the real beauty of this system is that you can carry on adding track, rolling stock and accessories as the child gets older. Talking of the track, despite it seeming to be a relatively straightforward piece of construction, we have found that other makes of Brio-like track are of noticeably poorer manufacture and in some cases (such as that from Ikea) do not interconnect well. You may well pay more for the Brio brand name, but judging by the quality of this set, it is probably worth the extra.

The Mighty Red Action Locomotive is a battery-powered engine full of great features. This plastic engine is bigger than most BRIO trains at approximately 13 cm long and has eight wheels for super power. A switch on the top allows the engine to be used in both free wheel and battery-powered play. There are three buttons on the top, the first activates reverse motion, bell, reverse sound and rear flashing light, the second stops everything and the third activates forward motion, headlights and authentic steam engine sound. It has magnetic coupling for pulling trucks and coaches and rubber grips on the wheels for extra pulling strength. Recommended for aged three and up. Req...
Adds a new dimension to a push along set, 2009-01-01 The mighty red action loco has proved a great addition to my son's train set. It has added a new dimension. Previously the set consisted of push along trains - the addition of batteries has changed everything!
In response to concerns in earlier reviews:
I had no problems with the battery compartment, it's held in place with one screw and seems very secure.
The engine is able to climb our bridges from the Tesco and Bigjig range (but only on it's own, not with carriages attached). We don't have any Brio bridges so can't comment on whether it makes it over or not.
Overall a fun product.

Excellent train for little train lovers, 2008-12-06 My 2 year old plays with his train set a lot and this little train has lasted through nearly a year of fairly consistant abuse and is still living to tell the tale. It doesn't go very fast but is somewhat hypnotic as it chugs round the track (and quite a bit off it as well). Takes one AAA battery and uses it quite fast - rechargeable ones work great for us.

Great Gizmos
Stack and match the coloured shapes. This traditional multi-function toy is designed to provide many advantages for young children. They develop thinking and physical skills, promote creative play, thought and learning, all in a fun environment. 18 Months +
Good quality traditional wooden toy., 2008-12-29 Brightly coloured, hand-sized shapes (for little hands, that is!!). Colours and size appeal to toddlers and encourage learning. Shapes fit snugly on the rods and need to be 'pulled' off, rather than just tipped upside down! If you're fed up with all the plastic toys on the market and are looking for a quality traditional wooden toy then give this a go. I'm impressed with it so far.

Be a park ranger on patrol and take a train to see the animals in the wild! If you look, you can see the footprints that the animals have left on one stretch of track!
Set builds into a 14 piece figure of eight track. Comes complete with including engine, safari guide, open transport wagon, a zebra and rhinoceros, a wooden jungle grove to hide in and decorated viaduct with ramps. A perfect extension to any BRIO Wooden Railway set..

Entice your child's imagination with this fun set! You get three cars in one with this awesome 8-wheeler and the two cars it is hauling! This set is great for individual, or group play.
Nice cute truck BUT, 2005-08-14 The problem of this truck is that the rear panel rapidly (and I mean it: less than a day) doesn't stay vertical, which really annoys my little boy. So I am oblige to stuck it with something (tape, match, etc...), which is neither very secure nor very handy. A pity as you get 3 little vehicles in one box to play with, and the truck looks very cool.
